When to Book Your Baby Photography Session (and Why It Matters) in Flintshire, North Wales

If you’re expecting a baby — or already holding your little one in your arms — you’ve probably wondered:

“When should I book a photography session?”

“Have I already missed the best time?”

As a newborn and baby photographer serving families across North Wales, Cheshire, the Wirral and neighbouring areas, I’m often asked these exact questions — and I’m here to simplify the process for you.

Let’s walk through exactly why to bookwhen to book and how to secure your session stress-free with me at www.lilianasecasantos.co.uk.

Why families choose a professional baby photoshoot?

Because the first year flies by - Babies change in the blink of an eye. One minute they’re curled up and sleepy, the next they’re rolling, crawling and showing their little personality. Professional photography freezes these fleeting moments beautifully, so you can revisit them for years to come.

Because you deserve to be in the story too - You deserve to be in the photos too. Parents are so often the ones behind the camera — and that includes mums and dads alike. A professional session gives you the chance to step into the frame and create meaningful images with your baby, not just of them.

Whether it’s mum’s gentle cuddles or dad’s proud arms, these moments together often become the most treasured family photos in your house.

Because quality makes a difference - While phone photos are lovely for everyday memories, a professional newborn session offers:

  • Safe, trained newborn posing

  • Flattering studio lighting

  • Carefully styled setups

  • Professional retouching

  • Artwork-quality images

This is about creating heirlooms, not just snapshots.

When should you book your session?

Timing is one of the biggest factors in getting the dreamy images you love.

For newborn photoshoots, the ideal age is around 5–14 days old. During this time, babies are typically sleepier and more settled, which makes it easier to achieve those beautiful curled, sleepy poses many parents love. Newborn acne often hasn’t appeared yet, and they tend to be less gassy, which helps the session flow smoothly.

After 14 days, babies usually become more alert, stretch out more, and spend longer periods awake. They are just as beautiful to photograph, but sessions may require a little extra time for settling, and some curled poses can be more challenging to achieve — although they are still often possible.

Ultimately, there is no right or wrong time to capture your baby. The most important thing is simply preserving these precious memories — at any age.

Best time to book: During pregnancy (after your 20-week scan is perfect).

Why book early?

  • Ensure availability around your preferred date

  • Newborn stage is very short

  • Your due date is reserved in my diary

  • Session date remains flexible once baby arrives

Baby milestone sessions – The first year is full of beautiful stages to celebrate and photograph. Every milestone brings new expressions, personality and adorable moments worth preserving.

Popular milestones are:

  • 3–6 months: first smiles & tummy time

  • 6–9 months: sitting confidently

  • 12 months: standing & first birthday celebrations

When to book: ideally 6-8 weeks in advance. This secures your preferred date and allows time to thoughtfully plan every detail around your baby’s personality and celebration. Early booking is especially important if you plan to use your photos for first birthday invitations, ensuring everything is ready in perfect time for your little one’s special day.

A maternity photography session is a beautiful way to document the very beginning of your baby’s story. Sessions are best scheduled between 28–34 weeks of pregnancy, when your bump is beautifully round and you’re usually still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy the session.

Best time to book: During your second trimester, ideally just after your 20-week scan. Booking ahead allows for plenty of time to plan your session, talk through your vision, and secure your preferred date in my diary.
